He Is Able To Save To The Uttermost
Introduction: There Is an Able Saviour
There are many things human beings can accomplish. We can build great cities, develop remarkable technology, cross oceans, explore space and accomplish things previous generations could scarcely imagine.
Yet there is one problem humanity cannot solve by its own ability:
the problem of sin.
Education cannot remove sin.
Money cannot purchase forgiveness.
Religion cannot cleanse the conscience.
Good works cannot erase guilt.
Human philosophy cannot reconcile a sinful person to a holy God.
Sin has separated humanity from God.
But the Gospel announces good news:
“Wherefore he is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by him, seeing he ever liveth to make intercession for them.” — Hebrews 7:25
What human strength cannot accomplish, Jesus Christ is able to accomplish completely.
He is able to save
Not partially.
Not temporarily.
Not superficially.
He can save to the uttermost.
1. WHY DO WE NEED TO BE SAVED?
Before we can appreciate the greatness of salvation, we must understand the seriousness of our condition.
The Bible says:
“For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God.” — Romans 3:23
Sin is not merely making mistakes.
Sin is rebellion against the holy God.
It affects our relationship with God, corrupts the heart and places humanity under condemnation.
Romans 6:23 declares:
“For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.”
The greatest human need is therefore not merely financial prosperity, physical comfort or social advancement.
Our greatest need is reconciliation with God.
And that is precisely what Jesus came to provide.
2. JESUS CHRIST CAN SAVE
Hebrews 7:25 begins with three powerful words:
“He is able.”
Our salvation rests upon the ability of Christ.
Jesus is not a helpless Saviour.
He is not merely a teacher who tells us how to save ourselves.
He is the Son of God who came into the world to save sinners.
The angel declared concerning Him:
“Thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins.” — Matthew 1:21
Notice the purpose of His coming:
He shall save.
The Cross was not a tragic accident.
Christ deliberately gave Himself for us.
Isaiah had prophesied:
“But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities.” — Isaiah 53:5
Our salvation is therefore not based upon our ability to save ourselves.
It is based upon Christ’s finished work.
3. HE SAVES TO THE UTTERMOST
What does “to the uttermost” mean?
It carries the idea of complete, full and perfect salvation.
Jesus does not merely make salvation possible and leave us to finish the work ourselves.
He is completely sufficient.
He saves from:
The guilt of sin
Our sins can be forgiven through Christ.
“In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins.” — Ephesians 1:7
The condemnation of sin
“There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus.” — Romans 8:1
The power of sin
Christ does not merely forgive the sinner; He begins transforming the sinner.
“Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature.” — 2 Corinthians 5:17
The dominion of Satan
Christ delivers those who were held in bondage.
“For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil.” — 1 John 3:8
The final presence of sin
The salvation Christ begins will ultimately be brought to its glorious completion.
Jude 24 says that God is:
“able to keep you from falling, and to present you faultless before the presence of his glory with exceeding joy.”
What a Saviour!
4. BUT WHO DOES HE SAVE?
Hebrews 7:25 gives us an essential qualification:
“Them that come unto God by Him.”
This is tremendously important.
The Bible does not teach universal salvation—that everyone will automatically be saved regardless of what they believe.
Christ’s salvation is sufficient for all, but it must be personally received by faith.
Jesus said:
“He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already.” — John 3:18
And John 3:16 says:
“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”
The invitation is universal:
Whosoever.
But the response must be personal:
Believeth in Him.
5. THERE IS NO OTHER WAY TO GOD
Hebrews 7:25 does not say that people come to God through their own goodness.
It says:
“come unto God by Him.”
Who is “Him”?
Jesus Christ.
This agrees perfectly with the words of Jesus:
“I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.” — John 14:6
The apostles proclaimed the same truth:
“Neither is there salvation in any other.” — Acts 4:12
Christianity is therefore not simply another religious path among many.
Jesus Christ is the way to the Father.
The Church cannot save us.
A denomination cannot save us.
A pastor cannot save us.
Baptism cannot save us.
Religious activity cannot save us.
Jesus alone saves.
6. JESUS DOES NOT ABANDON THOSE HE SAVES
There is another beautiful truth in Hebrews 7:25:
“Seeing he ever liveth to make intercession for them.”
The Saviour who died for us is now alive.
Jesus rose from the dead.
He ascended to the Father.
And He continues His ministry of intercession.
Romans 8:34 declares:
“It is Christ that died, yea rather, that is risen again, who is even at the right hand of God, who also maketh intercession for us.”
Think about this:
The One who paid for our salvation is alive to intercede for us.
Our confidence is therefore not in our own perfection.
Our confidence is in our living Lord.
7. LOOKING UNTO JESUS
This brings us to Hebrews 12:2:
“Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith.”
The Christian life begins with Jesus and must continue with Jesus.
We must keep our eyes upon Him.
When circumstances are difficult—look to Jesus.
When temptation comes—look to Jesus.
When you feel weak—look to Jesus.
When you have fallen—return to Jesus.
When you cannot see the way forward—look to Jesus.
He is the Author of our faith.
And He is the Finisher of our faith.
Our eyes must not ultimately be fixed on ourselves, other people or our circumstances.
Our eyes must be fixed on Jesus.
8. HE CAN SAVE THE MOST HOPELESS PERSON
One of the great testimonies of the Gospel is that no sinner is beyond the reach of Christ’s saving power when that person genuinely comes to Him.
The Apostle Paul described himself as formerly being a blasphemer, persecutor and violent man, yet Christ showed him mercy.
If Jesus could save Saul of Tarsus, He can save anyone who genuinely comes to Him.
The issue is not:
“Am I too sinful for Jesus?”
The greater question is:
“Will I come to Jesus?”
The blood of Jesus is sufficient.
His grace is sufficient.
His power is sufficient.
He can save to the uttermost.
9. SALVATION CHANGES THE DESTINATION OF A LIFE
Salvation is not merely about escaping hell.
It is about being reconciled to God.
John 1:12 gives us one of the most beautiful privileges of salvation:
“But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name.”
The person who believes in Christ receives:
- forgiveness,
- reconciliation with God,
- new life,
- adoption into God’s family,
- the presence of the Holy Spirit,
- hope,
- and the promise of eternal life.
The Gospel therefore moves us from condemnation to justification, from death to life, and from alienation to sonship.
10. THE QUESTION IS: WHAT WILL YOU DO WITH JESUS?
The message of salvation demands a response.
Jesus can save.
But have you come to Him?
You may know about Jesus without knowing Jesus.
You may attend church without being born again.
You may admire Christianity without surrendering your life to Christ.
You may know Scripture intellectually without personally trusting the Saviour revealed in Scripture.
The question is therefore not merely:
“Do you know about Jesus?”
The question is:
“Have you believed in Jesus Christ and surrendered your life to Him?”
Jesus said:
“He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life.” — John 3:36
A CALL TO THE SINNER
If you have never truly come to Jesus, come today.
You do not have to clean yourself up before coming to Him.
Come as a sinner.
Come with repentance.
Come with faith.
Come believing that Jesus Christ died for your sins and rose again.
Call upon Him.
Romans 10:13 says:
“For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”
There is forgiveness in Christ.
There is mercy in Christ.
There is cleansing in Christ.
There is new life in Christ.
There is eternal life in Christ.
He can save to the uttermost.
A WORD TO THE BELIEVER
If you have already trusted Christ, do not abandon your confidence.
Keep looking unto Jesus.
He is your Saviour.
He is your High Priest.
He is your Advocate.
He is your Intercessor.
He is the Author and Finisher of your faith.
When you are weak, depend upon Him.
When you are tempted, flee to Him.
When you stumble, repent and return to Him.
When the road becomes difficult, keep looking unto Him.
And when your earthly journey is complete, He will bring His saving work to its glorious consummation.
CONCLUSION
The Gospel can be summarised in one glorious declaration:
JESUS CHRIST IS ABLE.
He is able to save the guilty.
He can save the broken.
He is able to save the hopeless.
He is able to save the enslaved.
He can save the religious person who has never truly known Him.
He is able to save the worst sinner who genuinely repents and believes.
He can forgive.
He can transform.
He can keep.
He can finish what He begins.
And He can present His people faultless before the presence of God’s glory.
Therefore:
“Wherefore he is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by him.” — Hebrews 7:25
The question is no longer whether Jesus is able.
He is.
The question is:
Will you come to God through Him?
Believe in Jesus Christ.
Receive Him.
Follow Him.
Abide in Him.
And look unto Him.
For He alone can save to the uttermost.

Heavenly Father,
We thank You for sending Your Son, Jesus Christ, to save us from our sins.
Thank You that Jesus can save to the uttermost all who come to You through Him.
Help those who have never believed in Christ to repent and put their faith in Him today. Open their hearts to understand that there is salvation in no other name.
For those who already belong to Christ, strengthen their faith and help them to keep looking unto Jesus, the Author and Finisher of their faith.
Keep us faithful until the end, and let our lives bring glory to the One who loved us, died for us, rose again and ever lives to make intercession for us.
In the mighty name of Jesus Christ. Amen.
