His Name Is Higher Than Every Other Name
Text: Philippians 2:9–11
There is a name that stands above every other name.
Some names command respect because of position, wealth, achievement, authority, influence, education or power. Human history is filled with the names of kings, presidents, rulers, scientists, philosophers, military leaders and people whose accomplishments have affected generations. Some names are remembered for centuries, while others eventually disappear from human memory.
But there is one eternally different name.
It is the name of Jesus Christ.
The Bible declares:
“Therefore God also has highly exalted Him and given Him the name which is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow… and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.” — Philippians 2:9–11 (NKJV)
This is not merely a statement about the greatness of Jesus’ name. It is a declaration concerning His supreme authority, His exalted position, His Lordship and the destiny of every human being.
Jesus Christ is not merely one name among many.
His name is above every name.
The Name Above Every Name
Paul’s declaration in Philippians 2:9 begins with the word “Therefore.”
That word is important because it connects verses 9–11 with what came before.
Jesus Christ had humbled Himself. Though He existed in the form of God, He took the form of a servant. He became obedient to the point of death—even the death of the cross.
His exaltation therefore followed His humiliation and obedience.
God highly exalted Him and gave Him the name which is above every name.
The cross was not the end of the story.
The grave was not the end of the story.
Death was not the end of the story.
Jesus Christ was raised from the dead, exalted by the Father and declared Lord.
The One who humbled Himself became the One whom heaven, earth and everything under the earth must acknowledge.
Jesus Christ Is Above Every Earthly Name
Human beings place great importance on names.
A person’s name may represent family, authority, reputation, achievement or influence. Some names open doors. Some names command attention. Some names carry political or economic power.
But every earthly name has limitations.
A president cannot save a sinner.
A billionaire cannot purchase eternal life.
A scholar cannot explain away the judgment of God.
A military commander cannot defeat death.
A physician can treat disease, but cannot ultimately prevent death.
A human leader can govern nations, but cannot become Lord of heaven and earth.
Every human being, regardless of position, is a creature who must ultimately answer to the Creator.
But Jesus Christ is different.
His authority does not come from human appointment. His kingdom does not depend upon political recognition. His Lordship is not conferred upon Him by earthly governments.
God has highly exalted Him.
Therefore, no earthly name can be placed alongside the name of Jesus as though they possess equal authority.
His Name Is Above Every Spiritual Power
The supremacy of Jesus Christ extends beyond human authority.
Scripture teaches that there are spiritual realities that human beings cannot see with their physical eyes. Yet Jesus Christ is Lord over all.
The New Testament repeatedly presents Christ as exalted far above every principality, power, authority and dominion.
This is why the believer does not need to live in fear.
Our confidence is not in our own strength.
Our confidence is in Christ.
The Christian does not overcome because he is stronger than every spiritual opposition. He overcomes because he belongs to the One whose name is above every name.
There is no spiritual power equal to Jesus Christ.
No darkness can overthrow Him.
There is no bondage beyond His authority.
There is no power of sin that is greater than His saving grace.
No grave can hold Him.
There is no kingdom that can dethrone Him.
Jesus Christ is Lord.
The Name of Jesus Is Connected With Salvation
The supremacy of Jesus’ name is not merely a subject for theological discussion. It has eternal consequences.
The Bible declares that salvation is found in Jesus Christ.
Peter boldly proclaimed:
“Nor is there salvation in any other, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.” — Acts 4:12 (NKJV)
This is one of the most important truths the world needs to hear.
Jesus is not merely an excellent teacher among many teachers.
He is not merely a prophet among prophets.
He is not merely a religious leader among religious leaders.
He is the Saviour.
There is no other name by which sinners can be reconciled to God.
There is no other name that can cleanse sin.
There is no other name that can give eternal life.
There is no other name that can reconcile fallen humanity to a holy God.
Therefore, the question is not simply whether Jesus has a great name.
The question is:
What have you done with Jesus Christ?
Every Knee Will Bow
Philippians 2:10 says that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow—in heaven, on earth and under the earth.
This is a universal declaration.
Nobody will be excluded.
Every category of creation is brought under the authority of Christ.
There will be no exception because of wealth.
No exception because of education.
No exception because of nationality.
No exception because of social status.
No exception because of political influence.
No exception because of religious position.
No exception because a person refused to believe during his earthly life.
Every knee will bow.
The question is not whether you will ultimately acknowledge the Lordship of Jesus Christ.
The question is when you will bow.
Today, you can bow willingly in faith, repentance and worship.
One day, every person will acknowledge His authority.
Every Tongue Will Confess That Jesus Christ Is Lord
Philippians 2:11 brings the declaration to its climax:
“And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.” — Philippians 2:11 (NKJV)
The central confession is:
Jesus Christ is Lord.
Not merely “Jesus is helpful.”
Not merely “Jesus is a good man.”
Not merely “Jesus is my teacher.”
Not merely “Jesus is one way among many.”
Jesus Christ is Lord.
His Lordship is universal.
His authority is absolute.
His kingdom is everlasting.
His name is exalted.
And His Lordship ultimately brings glory to God the Father.
But Will You Confess Him Now?
There is a solemn difference between acknowledging Christ and trusting Christ.
A person may know about Jesus without knowing Jesus.
A person may respect Christianity without surrendering to Christ.
A person may attend church without being born again.
A person may know Christian language without possessing saving faith.
The Bible calls people to believe in Jesus Christ.
Salvation requires a personal response to the Gospel.
Jesus did not come merely to give humanity another religious system.
He came to save sinners.
He died for our sins.
He was buried.
He rose again the third day.
And He calls people to repent and believe in Him.
The Name Above Every Name Gives Hope to the Believer
For the Christian, the supremacy of Jesus is a source of tremendous hope.
When circumstances appear overwhelming, Jesus is still Lord.
When sickness comes, Jesus is still Lord.
When opposition arises, Jesus is still Lord.
When doors seem closed, Jesus is still Lord.
When the believer faces uncertainty about tomorrow, Jesus is still Lord.
When death approaches, Jesus is still Lord.
Our circumstances do not determine whether Jesus is Lord.
He is Lord regardless of our circumstances.
The throne of Christ is not threatened by the difficulties of our lives.
His authority does not rise and fall with our emotions.
His promises do not become uncertain because our circumstances become difficult.
Jesus Christ remains the same.
Therefore, the believer can say:
My Lord is greater than my problem.
My Saviour is greater than my sin.
My King is greater than my opposition.
My Redeemer is greater than my past.
My hope is greater than my circumstances.
Because His name is above every name.
There Is No Greater Refuge Than Jesus
The world offers many places of refuge.
People trust money, connections, possessions, education, influence and human strength.
But all these things are temporary.
Money can disappear.
Positions can change.
Friendships can fail.
Human strength can weaken.
Health can decline.
Earthly kingdoms can fall.
But Jesus Christ remains.
When everything else fails, Christ does not fail.
When earthly foundations shake, Christ remains the sure foundation.
When human promises disappoint, His promises remain faithful.
This is why knowing Jesus is not a temporary religious experience.
Jesus Christ must become the foundation of our lives.
The Name of Jesus Calls Us to Surrender
If Jesus is Lord, then He deserves more than admiration.
He deserves surrender.
We cannot genuinely confess that Jesus is Lord while deliberately refusing His authority over our lives.
His Lordship affects our choices.
It affects our relationships.
It affects our priorities.
It affects our words.
It affects our attitudes.
It affects our treatment of others.
It affects how we use our time.
It affects how we respond to temptation.
It affects whether we obey the Word of God.
To call Jesus Lord is to recognise His rightful authority over our entire lives.
Jesus does not want to be Lord only on Sunday.
He is Lord on Monday.
He is Lord at work.
He is Lord at home.
He is Lord in private.
He is Lord when nobody is watching.
He is Lord over everything.
The Name Above Every Name and Eternal Life
The supremacy of Jesus also points us toward eternity.
This world is not our final destination.
Every human being is moving toward eternity.
The question we must settle now is our relationship with Jesus Christ.
Those who believe in Him receive eternal life. Those who reject Him remain under condemnation because they have rejected God’s provision for salvation.
Jesus Himself said:
“He who believes in the Son has everlasting life.” — John 3:36 (NKJV)
This is why the Gospel is so urgent.
The message is not simply:
“Jesus has a great name.”
The message is:
Jesus is Lord and Savior, and you must come to Him in faith.
Do not postpone your response to Christ.
Do not assume that you will have another opportunity.
Do not allow pride, sin, fear, tradition or the opinions of people to keep you from surrendering to Jesus.
The One whose name is above every name is calling you.
What Should We Do With Jesus?
If Jesus Christ is Lord, then the proper response is faith, repentance, worship and obedience.
Come to Him.
Believe in Him.
Trust Him.
Repent of your sins.
Receive His forgiveness.
Surrender your life to Him.
Follow Him.
Live for Him.
And remain faithful to Him.
The Christian life is not about merely carrying the name of Christ.
It is about belonging to Christ.
Conclusion: His Name Will Never Be Dethroned
The world may ignore Jesus.
People may mock His name.
Governments may change.
Cultures may change.
Human philosophies may rise and fall.
People may attempt to replace God with human wisdom.
But none of these things will change the eternal truth:
Jesus Christ is Lord.
God has highly exalted Him and given Him the name which is above every name. At His name every knee will bow, and every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
The question, therefore, is not whether Jesus will ultimately be acknowledged.
He will.
The question is whether you will willingly acknowledge Him now.
Will you bow before Him in faith?
Will you trust Him as your Saviour?
Will you surrender to Him as your Lord?
Will you follow Him while you have opportunity?
There is no name greater than the name of Jesus.
No Savior greater.
No Lord greater.
No King greater.
No hope greater.
No name higher.
His name is higher than every other name.
And to Him belongs all glory, honor, power and praise.
Jesus Christ is Lord.
A Final Call
If you have never surrendered your life to Jesus Christ, do not merely admire Him from a distance. Come to Him now!
Believe that He died for your sins and rose again the third day.
Repent of your sins.
Put your faith in Him.
Confess Him as Lord.
Receive Him as Savior.
And begin your journey of knowing Jesus Christ.
For the One whose name is above every name is able to save completely those who come to God through Him.
